Ruble Gains as Putin Orders Troop Pullback!

The Indian rupee snapped a four-day gaining streak on Tuesday, retreating from 11-month highs hit in the previous session after oil importers rushed in to buy dollars, while a rally in domestic shares slowed after powerful recent gains. Intervention from the Reserve Bank of India has been capping broader gains for the local currency, dealers said, as the central bank builds up currency reserves and is drafting a game plan to protect the rupee against the sort of rout that alarmed policymakers and investors last year. The partially convertible rupee closed at 58.63/63 per dollar versus 58.59/60 on Monday.

Ruble Drops Before Russia Reacts to East Ukraine Secession Votes!

The Indian rupee fell slightly on Monday, retreating from a nearly 10-month high hit earlier in the session, on the back of suspected heavy dollar buying by the central bank ahead of exit polls due out later in the day. Initial gains in the rupee tracked a rally in Indian shares to record highs on widespread hopes that those projections would show the Bharatiya Janata Party and its allies winning a majority in the elections, given the opposition is seen by markets as being more investor friendly. The partially convertible rupee closed at 60.05/06 per dollar compared with 60.02/03 on Friday. The unit gained to as high as 59.51.

The Indian rupee fell slightly!

The Indian rupee fell slightly on Wednesday, retreating from a one-month high hit earlier as a sharp fall in local shares and good dollar demand from oil importers offset corporate greenback sales and a lift from stronger Asian currencies.  Although the rupee rose to as high as 59.96 earlier in the session, its highest since April 9, on the back of a large corporate dollar sale, traders said sentiment remains cautious ahead of the outcome of the national elections on May 16, while exit polls will start to be disclosed on Monday. The partially convertible rupee closed at 60.135/145 per dollar compared with its previous close of 60.11/12.

Pound Rises to 4-Year High on Growth Bets, Takeover Deals

The rupee ended little changed on Monday, retreating from a one-week high hit earlier in the session as domestic shares fell for a second consecutive session and as caution prevailed ahead of the Federal Reserve's meeting this week. Flows were dominated by large month-end dollar demand from oil companies, although that was offset by strong selling of the U.S. currency by a large engineering firm earlier in the day. Trading in the rupee is expected to remain range-bound with investors monitoring global factors such as tensions in Ukraine, as well as foreign flows into domestic markets, all while the outcome of elections looming next month.

Rupee Strengthens to Eight-Month High on Capital Inflows!

The Indian rupee retreated after earlier hitting its highest level in eight months on Wednesday as importers rushed in to buy dollars, while traders also speculated about possible central bank intervention. The rupee has remained supported by a powerful rally in Indian shares, which touched a record high for an eight consecutive session on Wednesday, on the back of strong foreign inflows. Sentiment was also supported after the Reserve Bank of India kept interest rates on Tuesday as widely expected as it shifts to growth from boosting inflation.

Traders expect the unit to hold in a 59.50 to 61.00 range!

The Indian rupee snapped its four-day rising streak on Thursday as month-end dollar demand from importers, particularly oil firms, hurt while concerns about central bank intervention also prompted investors to refrain from shorting the dollar. The central bank has been suspected to have bought dollars aggressively over the last two trading sessions to shore up its foreign exchange reserve and prevent a massive appreciation in the local unit which could be detrimental to export growth. Traders expect the unit to hold in a 59.50 to 61.00 range in the near term.

Indian rupee rallied to an eight-month high!

The Indian rupee rallied to an eight-month high, boosted by continued foreign fund inflows into domestic shares, but suspected dollar purchases by the central bank prevented the currency from gaining much further. The RBI has long been expected to start buying dollars when the rupee strengthens to add to foreign exchange reserves of $297.29 billion-the highest since late December 2011. The central bank's Dollar purchases would reflect the strength of a rupee rally. The RBI had to regularly buy the domestic currency just about half a year ago to keep it from hitting record lows.
